Obtain HPCC Access

This page contains information on requesting and managing ICER High-Performance Computing Center (HPCC) access using the HPCC Access Management Form.

MSU Faculty serving as a designated Principal Investigator (PI) on an MSU research project or as the Faculty-of-Record for an MSU course may request self-sponsored access to the HPCC. There is no fee associated with self-sponsorship.

All HPCC access must be associated with a valid MSU research project or current MSU course requiring high-performance computing resources.

A self-sponsored MSU PI may also sponsor HPCC user access for other researchers e.g., MSU research staff or external research collaborators and MSU students. There is no fee associated with user sponsorship, however a PI is responsible for the oversite of their sponsored users.

By requesting HPCC access, the PI agrees that all members of the research project will abide by MSU's Acceptable Use Policy and the MSU Institutional Data Policy.

Use the Add New Project/Course tab of the HPCC Access Management Form to request HPCC access for a new MSU research project or course. To submit this request a PI will need the following:

  • a publication-worthy abstract describing the research project, or the Registrar's course description
  • the MSU NetID of all sponsored users that require HPCC access for the project or course
  • any MSU or third party documentation related to Sensitive Data requirements

Use the Manage Existing Project/Course tab of the HPCC Access Management Form to update project details and add/remove sponsored user access to an existing MSU research project or course. To submit this request a PI will need the following:

  • the MSU NetID of all users that require HPCC access to the existing project or course

Use the Manage Sponsored Users tab of the HPCC Access Management Form to view and manage all HPCC users a PI has sponsored. To submit this request a PI will need the following:

  • the MSU NetID of all sponsored users that require HPCC access updates

Information on Sponsored Users

Please read the information below to understand the sponsorship process for each type of user.

Current MSU employees and students

HPCC accounts are free for all MSU researchers (e.g., research staff and students). To obtain access, an MSU Faculty PI must sponsor your account using the HPCC Access Management Form. Your sponsored user access must be associated with a valid MSU research project or current MSU course requiring high-performance computing resources.

Previous MSU employees and students

If you were previously affiliated with MSU as an employee or student, your HPCC account will be disabled during our recurring departed user checks. To maintain your access or to reactivate your HPCC account the MSU Faculty PI must sponsor your affiliated renewal.

To request to continue your HPCC access, or to reactivate your HPCC account, please email your sponsoring MSU PI and include the following:

  • Include your MSU NetID, a non-MSU email address, and your birthdate (this information is required to request continued affiliation)
  • Include these instructions on the request to affiliate your NetID for the purpose of continued HPCC access

    1. Submit the affiliate NetID Request TDX form In the Description section of the request form include:

      • That continued HPCC access is needed
      • The MSU NetID that requires continued access

An email address is required in the PIN letter section at the bottom of the form, but the PIN letter is not needed for continued HPCC access and will not be sent.

If you, as the PI, have questions about this step, please reach out to the MSU ID Office 517-355-4500, idoffice@msu.edu.

    1. Submit the HPCC Sponsored Renewal Form

Note: All MSU NetIDs used to access the HPCC must be associated with a valid email address. If your previous MSU email no longer works, please provide us with an alternative email.

External collaborators

To request an HPCC account for an external collaborator (i.e., a research group member who is neither a current nor a previous MSU employee or student), the PI must obtain a login-only, non-email MSU Affilaite FPID for the collaborator.

To request HPCC access for an external coolaborator, please follow these instructions:

  1. Submit the affiliate NetID Request TDX form; In the Description section of the request form state that "HPCC access is needed"

  2. Once the Affiliate FPID is acquired for the collaborator, the PI must sponsor access using the HPCC Access Management Form (the Affiliate FPID is not associated with a valid email address, the PI is responsible for providing a valid email address for the collaborator when completing the form)

For MSU PIs who want to sponsor HPCC accounts for users from one of these affiliated universities, please follow the following instructions:

  • The affiliated user must first register for an MSU Guest Account. Make sure that an official .edu email address from the affiliated university is used for the registration; otherwise, the HPCC account will not be created.

  • Once the MSU Guest Account has been activated for the affiliated user, they will need to complete the ICER Community ID Form, choosing MSU to authenticate, and using the credentials established while registering for the MSU Guest Account.

  • Once the ICER Community ID Form is received by HPCC staff, we will reach out to the MSU PI for approval and create the account.
